Conscious Sedation
The liquid medications used are Demerol (narcotic/sedative) and Phenergan (anti-nausea) which are available in the dental office. This technique is commonly used for children 3 to 6 years of age who are moderately apprehensive or who have a significant amount of treatment to be done. The oral medications will make the child drowsy but do not put the child to sleep… they are arousable at all times. This will not “tame” the completely uncooperative dental patient. Your child must have nothing to eat or drink for 6 hours prior to this appointment or the appointment will be rescheduled. Small amounts (small sips up to 2 ounces total) of clear liquids ONLY (ex. Water, apple juice) are acceptable up to 2 hours before the appointment.
